This series of books by Australian spiritual director Patrick Oliver is neither a translation nor a commentary on the Gospels. Rather, it is a recently revised synthesis of reflection on each individual verse of the four gospels, as he has come to appreciate its relevance to the movements of the soul in its response to grace.
When we allow ourselves to listen to life, we can begin to let mistakes and wounds be the way into deeper loving, we can let ourselves and others be mixtures of light and shadow, and we can surrender the need to be something other than who we truly are.
Such shifts in perspective also change the way we let the gospels tell us of who God is, and how we have imprisoned the appreciation of God into our mental cages. Patrick believes that the Gospels tell us of a God who is beyond formulae, rigid theology and tribal biases.
There are four volumes of "The Freeing of God", which have been lovingly evolving over fifteen years, and which cover the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
Patrick Oliver has been in ministry, and in particular in the field of spiritual direction, for forty years, and the content of these books is what he has mulled over since he was a little boy. He hears in the Gospel accounts the resonances of the soul rather than simply moral instruction, and a call to enter deeply and joyfully into becoming radically human within the Heart of God.
